Although “Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change” by Congressman John Lewis has been in print for a while, I was led to read it by a rather interesting set of circumstances. I was privileged to vote for Lewis during nearly 30 years while I lived in District 5 in Atlanta, GA, which he represented. When his memoir “Walking with the Wind” was published, I attended a book signing at a local bookstore, acquired an autographed copy, and had a chance to meet the author personally. When his passing was announced last week, I grieved with many of my friends…except for one of my conservative correspondents, who had this rather snide comment to make:“I'll bet the demonstrations for the late Black Senator will be tremendous and they may insist he be lain in the rotunda. gag (sic) me with a spoon.”After making my response: “John Lewis was not a senator, he was a representative, and as it happens, he was MY representative all the time I lived in Atlanta, and I voted for him and knew him personally. I also read his memoir (years ago, before I was reviewing), and I hold him in deep regard”, I began thinking I’d really like to re-read that book, but somehow in a recent move from GA to NM, I’d lost track of it. Checking Amazon for a possible replacement, though, I came across the Kindle version of this more recent writing, and decided to read it.What a blessing! Although “Across That Bridge” also contains a bit of memoir material, it is indeed more focused on the spiritual, psychological, and sociological insights which Lewis was so uniquely equipped to share. As I’ve been reading it, I’ve been bookmarking numerous passages that I am planning to share in my personal reflections over the next few weeks as part of my own memorial for this great man. He blessed many by his untiring work in Congress, with his oratory, and through his excellent writing, of which this book is indeed a superlative example. This book clearly opened my eyes about the racial issues in the 60's & 70's. I lived through these times but was busy raising a family not really aware of the pain and suffering the black citizens were dealing with. It's a classic case of out of sight out of mind. John Lewis is a remarkable man who made you feel as though you were there, feeling the pain of the individuals. I was raised to believe that I wasn't any better than the next guy and we were all created equal, however the white individuals didn't have to fight for their equality. They were born into it and treated it as a right. Not as something they were prepared to die for! Love John Lewis and his book!
